CM HR Recruitment

When did you start with Chandler Macleod?
January 2007

What are your qualifications and previous experience?
Bachelor of Arts (Psychology)
Receptionist at LivingWell Health Club and Receptionist at Audi

What roles have you had since at Chandler Macleod and describe your career progression?
I started as part of the Graduate Program. This involved three, 8-week rotations in different business units within Chandler Macleod. My first location was Recruitment Solutions in Park St, Sydney CBD, I then moved to Ready Workforce in Liverpool and finally to Chandler Macleod Health. At the conclusion of my final rotation I chose Recruitment Solutions in Park St to be my permanent placement. After a month there, a great opportunity in our new business unit HR recruitment, became available and I applied to relocate as I have always had an interest in HR. I am very fortunate to be part of CMHR from inception and am very excited about it's future success within the company.

Describe your role and what a typical day would entail?
As a HR Recruitment Consultant, I handle recruitment of junior to mid-level HR positions. My typical day involves a morning coffee and then all elements of end-to-end recruitment from writing adverts, screening the response, interviewing suitable applicants and liaising with clients about their recruitment needs. Often I'll go to the gym at lunchtime to get out of the office or I find myself squandering my money away at the Queen Victoria Building.

How would you describe the culture and people at Chandler Macleod?
There is very much promotion of Work Life Balance. None of my friends can go to the gym at lunchtime or structure their own work hours. I like to start early and finish early, whereas others in the company will do the opposite. The people are very easy going and friendly. Moving through the rotations you have to start new every time, you don't know anyone or what your doing. But I never felt a burden, all my colleagues were more than happy to help me out and answer my incessant number of questions. I have made friends in all the brands and still keep in touch with them.

What do you like about working at Chandler Macleod?
The graduate program is fantastic as you get exposure to various areas of the business and can then make an informed choice about where you would like to work. Also the support from a very dedicated Graduate Coordinator has ensured I have got the very best from my time at here. I also like the size of the company, if you want to move to another state, they will do everything in their power to accommodate that.

Gary Cheavin
Business Development Manager
Forstaff Aviation

When did you start with Chandler Macleod?
I started with Chandler Macleod back in January 2007

What are your qualifications and previous experience?
I am an Aircraft maintenance Engineer by trade and had been involved with that for over 30 years before transitioning over to recruitment about 2 years ago with a medium sized Recruitment firm based here in Melbourne.

What roles have you had since at Chandler Macleod and describe your career progression?
When I started out with CM it was in a Business Development role for Ready Workforce based at Altona. I was then offered the opportunity to be the Business Development Manager for Forstaff Aviation, I'm now on a very steep learning curve so that I can justify everybody's faith in me and it makes my other BD roles for other companies look like telemarketing by comparison, it's simply fantastic.I love Business Development, identifying Clients, finding out what they want and how we can help them, generating rates, working out margins and getting in a signed TOB makes my day.

Describe your role and what a typical day would entail?
My role is to assist in the organic growth of Forstaff Aviation outside of the Avalon/Qantas relationship throughout Australia and New Zealand. My day usually begins with checking all my e-mails from both Clients and Candidates and answering both. With new Clients I'm usually talking to them on the phone first and from there arranging a meeting to discuss and obtain an agreement to our Terms Of Business.I also make it a point to meet with our employees on site and talk to them and their supervisor to make sure that everything's going as planned, as well attending the OH & S inspections.Lately I've also been involved with Marketing, writing and developing our Brochure, including taking some of the photo's that will be used. My days are busy, and are spent in and out of the office, on and off the phone and none of it could be done without the assistance of the CM family.

How would you describe the culture and people at Chandler Macleod?
I've found that I can call on anybody, anywhere in Australia and New Zealand and ask for assistance and it's given freely, I believe that I've been mentored by the best in the business and as for the training, it's simply there when you need it.I've never experienced a culture like the one that’s present at CM, everybody pulls together to help everybody else and there's an excitement in people in what they do, you don't hear of mondayitis, none of this TGIF talk, no clock watchers… it's just the way that CM makes people feel, regardless of where they work. People are the Key, and in CM it's not a catch phrase, it's what everybody knows to be true.

What do you like about working at Chandler Macleod?
What can I say, the people, the resources, the training and the support… It has to be the greatest Job in Australia and I wouldn't swap it for anything.

Kirsty Shottle
Manager, Candidate Strategy and Acquisition
Chandler Macleod Professional Recruitment

When did you start with Chandler Macleod?
August 1999

What are your qualifications and previous experience?
BSc Hons, Grad Dip HRM. Prior to joining Chandler Macleod I worked as an accountant in a CA firm, and before that in marketing with British Airways.

What roles have you had since at Chandler Macleod and describe your career progression?
I commenced as a Consultant within the Melbourne Temporary Accounting Team with Recruitment Solutions. In 2004 I progressed to head up the Permanent Accounting Team and then subsequently the Temporary and Permanent Accounting Team. In 2005 I moved into a newly created role of Manager, Candidate Strategy & Acquisition and then moved to Sydney to take on a national role. I am now Manager Business Improvement within the Professional Division.

Describe your role and what a typical day would entail?
I know a lot of people would say this, but I literally never have a typical day. Since moving to Sydney I have been involved in one project after another, making it very interesting. I spent 3 months working on the planning and testing stages of the EMS roll-out, and subsequently assisted with training and on-site support. Since then I have been busy with survey, reporting and analysis work on and continue my involvement in a number of other projects.

How would you describe the culture and people at Chandler Macleod?
When I interview people for jobs here I can’t stop talking about it. The transition from the Recruitment Solutions entity to Chandler Macleod to me was relatively seamless because of the similarities in culture. I find it to be quite collegiate; people here are keen to help each other, they often socialise outside of work, and I have never laughed as much as I do here.

What do you like about working at Chandler Macleod?
Everything I’ve just mentioned about the culture. If it was different I wouldn’t be here.

Meredith Lambert
Senior Consultant Psychologist, Melbourne
Chandler Macleod Consulting

When did you start with Chandler Macleod?
I first started with Chandler Macleod as a graduate back in 1997. For the first year I worked in recruitment, and then moved into the psychological services team. In early 2000 I left the company to travel overseas and work in other areas, and returned in August 2002.

What are your qualifications?
I have a Bachelor of Arts with a Psychology major, and a Master of Arts (Psychology). I am also a registered psychologist, and member of the Australian Psychological Society.

What roles have you had since at Chandler Macleod and describe your career progression?
I started in recruitment as an Associate Consultant in the Sydney office, getting to know the business and industry, as well as conducting some test administration for the Psychological Services area. After my first year I moved into Psychological Services in a full-time capacity for the next two years.

I rejoined Chandler Macleod in late 2002 as a Senior Psychologist in the Sydney office, and relocated to the Melbourne office in September 2005 to take up the position of Manager Psychological Services for Victoria.

Describe your role and what a typical day would entail?
A typical day is a combination of delivering assessment work, managing my team and the assessment process for this state, and undertaking development work. As a Senior Psychologist I am often asked to help out our Research and Development area, and I am also responsible for some of the national training provided to new Psychologists within the company.

The focus of our assessment services is on the psychological assessment of individuals for job selection, career development and performance management purposes - including counselling or coaching employees and managers on a range of organisational issues. I am often also involved in broader Human Resources consulting assignments, such as job profile redesigns, organisational surveys or team analyses.

How would you describe the culture and people at Chandler Macleod?
I find the culture at Chandler Macleod to be very stimulating, and unlike other places. This is one of the reasons I returned to the organisation when given the chance! We are the largest employer of Organisational Psychologists in Australia, and it is great to have a group of peers both within my own city and across the country who you can share ideas and talk through issues with. We are challenged to constantly keep learning, but it is an environment where support for this is readily available. From my experience it is also a team based culture, with an open management style across all levels, and very friendly people.

What do you like about working at Chandler Macleod?
As an Organisational Psychologist the employment environment available at Chandler Macleod is quite rare. More broadly, my experience has shown that although we are a big company with a number of distinct divisions, there is also a lot of collaboration across the various parts of the business. It is a company that values and rewards people for what they do, and clearly recognises that we are not all the same nor do we all approach our job in the same way. Individual strengths are optimised.

Brad O’ Loughlin
Managing Consultant
ENTEC

When did you start with Chandler Macleod?
I joined Chandler MacLeod’s engineering & technical division Entec late July 2006.

What are your qualifications and previous experience?
After leaving school, I worked in the Petro/Chem industry completing my Mechanical trade as a Fitter & Machinist specialising in Hydraulics. I continued working on plant upgrades and installations for companies such as Shell, Caltex, One Steel and Orica for approx 7 years. I moved into a CAD drafting role while studying Mechanical Engineering in Melbourne which led to later becoming a mechanical designer & CNC Machine programmer. Most recently, I spent the last 3 years as the General Manager of small (12 man) engineering business in Western Sydney specialising in the design & manufacture of prototype machinery components and medium size runs of OEM components. We would manufacture from raw stock anything from a working Periscopes for the navy to the mounting equipment for the plasma screens which make up the Big Screen at the NRL stadiums.

What roles have you had since at Chandler Macleod and describe your career progression?
I started as an Engineering Consultant and have recently joined the OH&S committee on a part time basis.

Describe your role and what a typical day would entail?
My morning routine starts with saying hello to all my workmates as I make my morning cup of tea. I then log on to check my schedule for the day & respond to any emails & phone messages left through the evening. My days vary at this point; I could be interviewing candidates for different roles, from mechanical project engineers who have just completed a Gas Processing plant in Iran to graduate Chemist recently graduated from UNSW. Alternatively, I could spend my day travelling out to client sites around Sydney Metro gaining an understanding of the on-site culture or project requirements for new roles or visiting one of the many Entec contractors – showing appreciation for their professional services.

How would you describe the culture and people at Chandler Macleod?
Based on the Chandler MacLeod psychometric testing model, it’s not surprising that we are fairly similar characters who develop friendly and respectful relationships. The social events and end of the week drinks in the boardroom also set a nice opportunity to develop friendships.

What do you like about working at Chandler Macleod?
The office environment is a great start, the people make it warm and fuzzy and the on-going training sessions make it a complete standout from other agencies.
